s.7 Repurpose Jewellery

Men’s / unisex jewellery for an adventure-seeking individual using material from heirloom rings.

This brief is sponsored by Vipa Designs.

Re-modelling of heirloom treasures remains a growing aspect of the jewellery industry, with clients seeking to upcycle their treasured jewels into contemporary, wearable designs, thus preserving a sense of family history in a stylish and lasting form.

The Vipa Designs Award returns this year with a client who wants to gift their son a special item of jewellery to wish him safe travels and great adventure as he embarks upon 6 months of travelling across South East Asia. He has just completed university where he studied Marine Biology, an intriguing field to which he is very committed and passionate about. He had to postpone his exciting travel plans due to the pandemic but is now excited and rearing to go!

The client wishes to use the materials from their grandparents wedding bands that together contain:

  • 11grams of 18ct white gold; and
  • Seven brilliant cut 1.5mm diameter sapphires & seven brilliant cut 1.5mm emeralds.

The client’s son is comfortable wearing jewellery (cuffs, rings, pendant/necklet, earring/s) and so they are happy for reasonable extras within their budget of £500.00 for additional components i.e., chain, earring backs, yellow gold detail etc.

Entrants must submit a breakdown of costings for the design and manufacture of the piece. A reasonable budget of £1,250 at retail has been agreed with the client.

As well as securing the Vipa Designs Award, and in liaison with the Award winner their design will be manufactured, set and finished by Vipa Designs.
