They are pieces that are more functional and composed of several parts that make the final article, however, they can have no function at all and are purely decorative.

- articles that incorporate a combination of skills such as engraving, enamelling, stone setting, lathe work or engine turning.
- a piece that often incorporates intricate detail and precise fitting parts.
- a piece that has hidden features / detail or moving mechanisms that may be only obvious when a hinged door, or lid to a box opens to reveal the inside.
