The GC&DC are thrilled to be partnering again with Principal Patrons Valcambi for the 2020/21 craftsmanship and design awards. This year we have created a uniquely exciting 2D design award that attunes to Valcambi’s founding principles which are at the forefront of their business.

Valcambi have expressed particularly enthusiasm in supporting GC&DC’s aim to spotlight ethics in the competition. They are world leaders in the refining and manufacturing of precious metals and take a lead role in promoting responsibly mined and sourced materials. Valcambi celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2021, and this design brief has been written in liaison with Virginie Bahon of Valcambi.

The Brief - Ethical Jewellery & Investment

Gold’s primary use is for making jewellery (around 50% of total gold demand), but it also continues to be a major investment product, and particularly when stock markets fluctuate.

Within Valcambi’s product range are successful, innovative and beautiful items that combine jewellery and investment purposes. This is the concept and ethical focus for this exciting and special creative challenge that could in turn see the winning design taken into Valcambi’s investment product range.

For sources of inspiration, you need to research and focus on responsible /ethical practices, and particularly on artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM). Valcambi strongly support miners in their efforts to adopt responsible labour, technical and sound environmental practices. They mine and provide the precious materials (metals and stones) that we use. You could also relate to the ASM community.

With ethics at the forefront of your proposal, we want you to create great jewellery design that has a parallel purpose of investment. The concept here is one of building a jewel and increasing its value and material investment. This can be achieved over a series of purchases and time by adding to the design. It can be any jewellery item but a Bracelet, Bangle, Pendant or Necklace provide scope and potential for this idea and approach. Alternatively, ideas are also welcome for any product design proposals in line with the brief requirements. Any designs for a bullion (investment) bar this must be of 99.5% gold fineness, and 99.9% for silver.

Valcambi offer three examples from their product range that attract gold investors, their SBEad Coin and Combibar as illustrated, plus the Armillary Coins

The main points of attention to embrace are:

  • Focus on responsible /ethical practices
  • Jewellery for building an investment
  • Valcambi celebrating 60 years of responsible practice in 2021

Additionally, and in liaison with the designer, if Valcambi feel the winning design would complement their company range, they would consider taking it into a commercial enterprise for their product portfolio.

The winning designer will also be invited to visit Valcambi in Switzerland.
