Platinum Jewellery 2D
Sponsored by Platinum Guild International
We are delighted to be partnering again with the Platinum Guild International (PGI) as Named Award Patrons to the GC&DC, who are sponsoring this section to promote Platinum jewellery, the most noble and durable of precious metals.
PGI and Tracr also work closely together, as you will see in their design brief for Traceable Diamond Jewellery.
The Brief
This year’s platinum category seeks to explore jewellery designs that exploit the interplay of open structure, space and form.
Design a Brooch, Pendant, Earwear or Ring using structures in platinum as the primary element to create and define form, volume and presence.
The aim is to achieve a distinctive statement of wearable art that captures space, light, shadow, even illusion, and illustrates the benefit and value of structural concepts into intimate and innovative personal adornment.
Designs must move beyond solid forms and explore how open and hollow shapes can be used to create volume, transparency, and dynamic silhouettes. We encourage research into different areas of work that best demonstrate this interplay, such as:
Architects: Edoardo Tresoldi, Santiago Calatrava, Shigeru Ban, Félix Candela & Heinz Isler
Structures: Bridges, hardware, chandeliers, bones and stems, etc.
Consider concepts of grids, lattices, trusses, arches, and woven forms, etc.
Also consider production methods of wirework, laser cutting, fold forming, electroforming and 3D printing, etc.
The design direction needs to play to platinum’s strength in creating a strong structural integrity sensitive to platinum’s weight, and emphasise platinum’s brilliance with high polish, capturing and exploiting light, reflections, illusion and striking aesthetics.
All designs must incorporate the following:
Platinum must be the main stakeholder (at least two-thirds) of your design.
Natural diamonds, pearls or other gems and materials can be incorporated to enhance your platinum designs.
Designs should successfully translate into manufacture and keep the finished gramme weights within familiar margins for platinum jewellery, i.e., that they are able to be competitive in the platinum jewellery market.
Judges will be looking for
