This exciting live project will result in the winning design being manufactured and presented to Sheffield’s Master Cutler in 2027.
The Brief
A Jewel for a Master Cutler
The next Master of the Company of Cutlers would like to commission a regalia jewel to be worn on official occasions during her term of office. She is looking for a hair ornament with elements that can transform into wearable piece/s of jewellery. She will be the 3rd female Master Cutler since 1624.

The piece will be made, so consideration and awareness must be given to manufacturing, production techniques and the finished weight.
To be made in silver, gemstones or techniques to add colour should also be incorporated in the design

Background to the Brief
Cutlers Hall is a true landmark at the heart of Sheffield. With a history dating back centuries, a building rich in character, heritage and tradition, reflecting the city’s proud industrial past and the important role of the cutlery industry in Sheffield’s story. Its stunning architecture and timeless elegance make it one of the city’s most distinctive and treasured buildings, while its continued place at the heart of Sheffield ensures its heritage remains very much alive and honoured today.
The Master Cutler is one of Sheffield’s most historic and respected roles, representing the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire and the city’s proud industrial heritage. The Master Cutler plays an important role in supporting local businesses, industry and the wider community, while promoting Sheffield and South Yorkshire. It is a role rich in tradition, but one that continues to have an important place in the city today.
Photographs, an introduction by the Sponsor and an interview with the next Master of the Company of Cutlers are included for inspiration.

Imaginative and creative outcomes, showing innovation and aesthetic appeal
Commercial potential in the transformative jewels
Practical and functional solutions
Suitability of proposed materials, processes and methods of manufacture
Appropriate inclusion of all details as laid out in the brief
Your entry must include the following
Designs are to be presented on one side only and mounted on card, foam board or equivalent backing board
Submissions - 1 x A3 (maximum)
Where appropriate, designs should include a 1:1 scaled drawing
Designs can be created by hand or using CAD, or in combination.
AI is not acceptable for this category
An Unmissable Opportunity
Subject to approval, the Master Cutler's Hair Ornament will be manufactured by Vipa Designs as a commissioned piece. The winning designer will be invited to visit Vipa to see their design taken into production.
This could also include a visit to present the completed jewel to the Master Cutler.
Guidance & Entry Form Requirements
Entries must comply with the 2D design and submission guidelines:
Good standards of visual communication and presentation will be highly regarded;
Description of your design, the concept and material specifications (gemstones, metals etc) must be provided on the design board.
Outline method/s of manufacture where relevant.
Entrants are requested to declare on the entry form if they have had their design rendered by a CAD technician or a digital artist.
Presentation
Designs are to be presented on one side only and mounted on card, foam board or equivalent backing board.
Paper only entries are not acceptable.
For all entries: x1 design board per entry.

Anonymity
Please ensure your name is on the reverse of your design board;
Do not put your name or identity/logos on the front of the design;
Entries that don’t conform to the above requirements may be disqualified.
