Jewellery or Smallwork 2D

Sponsored by Stephen Webster

We are delighted to continue our long-term partnership with GC&DC supporter Stephen Webster, who is once again sponsoring this Patron Named Award.

Stephen Webster is renowned for creating jewellery that rewards curiosity. His designs reveal more than they first appear, concealing hidden functions, challenging perception, and uncovering unexpected narratives. Whether through wit, craftsmanship or storytelling, each piece invites and compels a second look, revealing another layer of meaning, intrigue and purpose.

This mindset and philosophy set the tone for your creative challenge.

Fearless Creativity Beyond Boundaries

The Brief

More than Meets the Eye

This award invites designers to create a 2D concept for a piece of Jewellery or Smallwork that reveals itself upon closer inspection.

Your design should encourage discovery, inviting the wearer or viewer to look beyond the obvious. This may be physical, visual or conceptual. It could conceal a hidden element, challenge perception or transform through interaction. Whatever form it takes, the revelation should be integral to the design, rewarding curiosity, leaving a lasting impression.

As examples for inspiration, Stephen Webster's own work offers a precedent:

  • Poison Apple - conceals a hidden compartment within an alluring jewel, revealing a dangerous secret. (See pictures below)

  • Jitterbug  - inspired by creatures with dual names, such as the Horse Fly and Cuckoo Bee, inviting the viewer to look closer as two distinct identities are revealed within a single design. (See pictures below)

Designs should embody the Stephen Webster values of fearless creativity, wit, craftsmanship and bold storytelling, resulting in a piece that surprises, provokes curiosity and continues to surprise and delight long after the first impression.

This is your opportunity to challenge perception, uncover hidden beauty and create jewellery or smallwork that rewards and celebrates discovery.
