Platinum Jewellery 2D

Sponsored by Platinum Guild International

We are delighted to be partnering again with the Platinum Guild International (PGI) as Named Award Patrons to the GC&DC, who are sponsoring this section to promote Platinum jewellery, the most noble and durable of precious metals.

The winning design will be taken into manufacture using the platinum provided for this exciting opportunity.

The Brief

White Hot

As the Earth heats up, platinum is the unique metal built for the greatest resistance and resilience. Its high melting point means it doesn't just tolerate heat but remains stable under conditions that would liquefy any other precious metal. It also isn't just enduring a hotter world from the sidelines; it is one of our natural materials actively helping to solve/fix it, performing quietly inside catalytic converters and hydrogen fuel cells as the mechanism for making cleaner combustion and clean energy possible at scale. Never in doubt, platinum is a positive asset and inherent/stalwart flagship for a cleaner, better and sustainable future.

For this design challenge, using up to 31 grammes of platinum, we invite and welcome jewellery designs that express platinum's unique properties and superior resilience. You can propose any item of jewellery but again, reflecting on the importance of sustainability, your jewel needs to be adaptable to enable it to be worn in two ways/modes.

All designs should embrace the following:

  • Platinum must be the main stakeholder (at least two-thirds) of your design.

  • Natural diamonds, pearls or other gems and materials (provided by the award winner) can be incorporated to enhance your platinum design.

  • Designs should successfully translate into manufacture and keep the finished gramme weights within familiar margins for platinum jewellery, i.e. that they are able to be competitive in the platinum jewellery market.

Judges will be looking for

  • Imaginative and creative outcomes, showing innovation and aesthetic appeal

  • Practical and functional solutions

  • Suitability of proposed materials, processes and methods of manufacture

  • Highest standards of presentation and visual communication, including inspiration source, design development leading to the final design

  • Appropriate inclusion of all details as laid out in the brief

Your entry must include the following

  • Designs are to be presented on one side only and mounted on card, foam board or equivalent backing board

  • Design submissions – one A3 Board (maximum)

  • Where appropriate, designs should include a 1.1 scaled drawing

  • Designs can be created by hand or using CAD or in combination

  • Summary/description integrated within your design

  • Names should only be visible on the back of the entry

A Unique and Unmissable Opportunity

With the available platinum, subject to PGI’s approval, the winning designer will be invited to liaise with Vipa Designs in the manufacture of their design. This would include undertaking work experience at Vipa. It is also the intention that the completed jewel (owned by the award winner), will be promoted by PGI, and can be entered into the 2027/8 Goldsmiths’ competition as a 3D finished piece.
